CCS, ABS, BV, DNV & LR: Marine Pump Class Approval Explained
Share
“Does this pump have class approval?” is a common question in shipbuilding and vessel replacement enquiries. The answer needs more detail than a certificate logo or a supplier's general statement.
For shipyards, shipowners and engineering teams, the relevant question is whether the proposed pump and its documentation satisfy the requirements of the specific vessel and system.
This guide explains the terms buyers encounter and the checks to complete before ordering. The applicable society's current rules and project requirements determine the final certification route.
What is a classification society?
Classification societies develop and apply technical rules for vessels, offshore assets and related equipment. Depending on the project, their work can include reviewing designs, materials, machinery, manufacturing, inspection and testing.
A classed vessel's equipment requirements depend on the rules and the function of the equipment. The shipyard, owner, flag requirements and contract may also define what the supplier must provide.
| Name | Organization | Official reference |
|---|---|---|
| CCS | China Classification Society | Product certificate information |
| ABS | American Bureau of Shipping | Type approval procedure |
| BV | Bureau Veritas | Materials and equipment certification |
| DNV | DNV | Materials and components certification |
| LR | Lloyd's Register | Type approval |
These links describe the societies' services. They do not establish approval of any LumeaPump product.
Does every marine pump need an individual class certificate?
No single rule applies to every pump on every vessel. Requirements depend on the vessel, pump function, system criticality, applicable class rules, flag requirements and project specification.
Before requesting offers, clarify:
- Which vessel and system the pump serves.
- Which society and current rule requirements apply.
- Whether design or type approval is required.
- Whether the supplied unit needs inspection, witness testing or product certification.
- Which documents the shipyard will accept.
A standard pump may be suitable for a permitted utility duty but insufficient for a duty requiring a particular approval or document package. The label “marine pump” does not settle this question.
Marine suitability and class approval are different checks
Marine suitability concerns the actual application: hydraulic performance, materials, seals, motor configuration, installation and operating environment.
Class-related approval concerns compliance with a defined approval or certification scope. Depending on the project, that can involve design review, manufacturer assessment, material records, testing and surveyor involvement.
Both checks matter. A certificate does not remove the need to confirm flow, head, liquid compatibility and installation requirements.
Type approval vs product certification
Type approval
Type approval generally evaluates a specified product design or range against defined requirements. Read the certificate's manufacturer, model range, technical scope, validity and conditions.
Procedures differ between societies. For example, ABS describes product design and manufacturing assessments within its type approval process. A design assessment alone should not be presented as the completed approval route when further assessment is required.
Product certification
Where required, certification relates to the supplied product or defined batch and its applicable inspection or testing requirements. It may involve material records, test reports, surveyor involvement and a product certificate.
Bureau Veritas distinguishes product-type review from materials and equipment certification services. Buyers should identify the required delivery documents rather than assuming a type approval certificate is always sufficient.
| Term | Buyer check |
|---|---|
| Type approval | Does the approval cover this manufacturer, model and configuration under its stated conditions? |
| Product certificate | Does the document identify the supplied unit or batch and required inspection scope? |
| Manufacturer approval | What manufacturing activity and scope are approved? Does the project require additional product documentation? |
| Test report | What was tested, who witnessed it and does it fulfil the specified requirement? |
Does one society's approval cover another?
Do not assume that CCS, ABS, BV, DNV and LR approvals are interchangeable. If the specification names ABS, the proposed equipment and documents must be reviewed against that requirement; the same principle applies to the other societies.
Defined mutual recognition arrangements can apply to certain products and conditions. For example, DNV explains that the EU RO mutual recognition scheme has specific scope and application limits. This is not a general substitute for project acceptance.
If an alternative certificate is proposed, obtain confirmation from the responsible project parties and relevant class before accepting the substitution.
How to check a marine pump certificate
A statement such as “we have CCS” or “BV available” is a starting point for verification. Request the actual document and review:
- Manufacturer: does the named organization match the actual manufacturer?
- Product description: does it cover the pump, its motor or another component?
- Model range: is the proposed model included?
- Scope: what rules, standards, materials or configurations are covered?
- Certificate number and status: can the document be verified?
- Validity and dates: are they appropriate to the supply and project?
- Conditions: are there limitations or required follow-up inspections?
- Delivery requirements: does the project also require a product certificate or witnessed testing?
For an existing installed unit, a type approval expiry date alone does not determine its continuing acceptance. Ask the relevant society how the certificate dates and original delivery records apply.
Use official verification resources
Where available, verify approval data through the issuing society's official resources:
- CCS product certificate search.
- ABS type approval database.
- BV Approval Explorer.
- DNV Approval Finder.
- LR type approval information and resources.
An approval database entry verifies a defined scope. It does not by itself prove that an individual delivery meets every requirement. If details are unclear or a document cannot be found, contact the issuing society.
Do CE marking or ISO 9001 replace class approval?
No. These documents address different matters. CE marking concerns conformity with applicable European product requirements; ISO 9001 relates to a quality management system.
Neither establishes CCS, ABS, BV, DNV or LR approval for a particular pump. Review the class-related documents required for the vessel separately.
Confirm class requirements before the final quotation
Approval and inspection requirements can affect model choice, materials, motor specification, testing, documentation, lead time and price. Confirming them after production starts can create avoidable rework or delay.
A practical purchasing sequence is:
- Define the pump application and required flow and head.
- Confirm liquid, temperature, materials and electrical supply.
- Identify the required society and applicable document package.
- Verify the proposed manufacturer, model and certificate scope.
- Agree inspection, testing and document delivery requirements.
- Compare the technical and commercial offers on the same basis.
Information to send with the enquiry
- Vessel or project name, vessel type and newbuilding or repair status.
- Pump function, liquid, temperature, flow and head.
- Required materials, installation arrangement and connections.
- Voltage, phase, frequency and motor requirements.
- Required classification society and the shipyard's technical specification.
- Required certificates, material records, drawings and test reports.
- Witness testing or inspection requirements, if specified.
- Quantity, delivery destination and timing.
Replacement projects
For replacements, include the existing model, pump and motor nameplates, original documents and installation drawings or photos. Confirm whether the replacement must preserve the original approval route and dimensional arrangement.
Matching flow and head alone does not establish project acceptance.
Discuss your marine pump documentation requirements
LumeaPump can review your pump duty and project specification. Tell us the required society and documentation at the enquiry stage so the available model options and documentation can be checked before quotation.
Approval availability must be confirmed for the specific manufacturer, pump model, configuration and project. This guide is not a claim that every LumeaPump pump holds CCS, ABS, BV, DNV or LR approval.
Send your marine pump specification and class requirements.
